Lucky PennyLucky Penny by L.A. Cotton
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I absolutely LOVED this book. I sat down to read it Saturday morning and before I knew it, the entire day had passed me by. That’s how good this book was. I’m ashamed to admit that this is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Cotton. However, it definitely won’t be my last book!

Penny and Blake met while being in the “system” at a foster home that was supposed to be a good, clean safe place for children. As is unfortunately the case more often than not, the foster home wasn’t what it appeared to be on the outside.

In Penny’s case, she was sent into the system after she was in a car accident that instantly killed her parents and her only family so she knew what it was to be in a loving happy home. Blake on the other hand hadn’t experienced that same unconditional love. I can’t say more about that as it will reveal a spoiler and I don’t do that in my reviews.

There was a connection between Penny and Blake that was beautiful to see. It was clear he was the light to her darkest days. They spent countless hours under the stars looking for constellations and talking about their futures as they only had a little over a year before they both aged out of the system and they could be together permanently. Except a day comes and Penny returns home from school and Blake is gone with no explanation, no letter no nothing. She is devastated and my heart cried for her when I read this as I could feel her pain. There is some ugliness that’s in that house that permeates the air.

“I was his lucky Penny. He was my light in the dark, hope in despair. Our bond was one of survival, friendship... first love.”

The next thing we know it’s 6 years later and Penny has never been able to recover from Blake’s sudden disappearance which has affected the 3 relationships she’s had since leaving the foster system. There’s a reason for this that we find out about that shouldn’t have shocked me, but did in so many ways! Penny is so withdrawn into herself that she has difficulties conversing with other people.

“I liked to stay hidden in the background. The spotlight was a place for perfectly primped girls like the ones currently cooing over the lingerie section at the back of the store.”

To hopefully help herself, Penny applies for and is accepted at a Summer camp that works with other foster children and who should show up at the same camp? That’s right, her first true love, Blake!

Penny’s battle is does she let Blake in again. Will he hurt her like he did in the past? Is she willing to risk that? It’s clear to everyone at the camp that Blake and Penny belong together, especially after one night around the campfire when Blake sings a song! What I especially loved about their time at the camp is that this allowed Penny to get comfortable with other people, especially some of her campers who she didn’t think she was helping. And there’s the friendship she developed with Marissa another camp counselor. To see Penny come out of her shell to let others in was such a huge step for her and Ms. Cotton did a phenomenal job in how these scenes were written. A lot of care and detail was put into this which as a reader I really appreciated.

After their time at camp, where Blake and Penny have reconnected, we move to the real world where we meet what the author calls the “piranhas!” What an accurate description of these women. One of these women in particular will have a resounding affect on Penny, Blake and their future.

There’s so much more I could say about the fabulousness of this book. But, that would give things away that I think are too important to the plot of the book and as I said earlier, I don’t give spoilers in my reviews.

These are the questions that we have answered when it’s all said and done…..

Do Blake and Penny maintain their reconnection once camp is over? Who else was involved in keeping them apart? Who wants to see them NEVER be together and why? What happened to the foster home that was the start of their friendship/love? Can Blake be the man Penny needs him to be for their future happiness? Please do yourself a favor and go 1-click this book. If you’re like me, you’ll devour it in one sitting!!!

Genre: Contemporary Romance
 Release Date: November 30, 2015

Blurb

I was his lucky Penny. He was my light in the dark, hope in despair. Our bond was one of survival, friendship... first love.

But then we were ripped apart and Blake Weston became the memory I turned to when everything else in my life fell apart.

Seven years later, a summer working at Camp Chance is supposed to be my fresh start. Beautiful scenery and the chance to better the lives of foster children--kids like me. But when my eyes land on him across the fire, time stands still and feelings come rushing back to the surface. I thought I'd moved on, tucked him away in my heart. One look into his soulful blue eyes and I know I'm wrong. Blake Weston can heal the broken parts of me. Restore my hope. Love me.

It's our second chance. A sign we are supposed to be together.

Isn't it?

I was twelve when I survived the accident that killed my parents. Fourteen when I survived the devil. And sixteen, when I survived a heartbreak of the worst kind.

But in my twenty-three years, Blake Weston might just be the first thing I won't survive.

Excerpt

Marissa didn’t follow me. It was most likely she had pieced together our story after Blake’s song. How could she not? It was as if he had weaved our entire relationship into his lyrics. I could feel his sixteen-year-old self singing every line to my sixteen-year-old self. Although, I was pretty certain the sixteen-year-old Blake I’d known then had no clue how to play the guitar.

After washing the tearstains from my face, I brushed my teeth. It was still early, but I couldn’t face going back out there, so I changed into my shorts and tank top and climbed into bed. Sleep would be impossible, but at least here, I was safe.

Most people felt lonely in solitude, but I welcomed the silence. I embraced it even. Something about the quiet, the knowledge no one else was around, comforted me. I knew it made me different. I didn’t need a shrink to tell me that, but it didn’t change the fact that I found sanctuary in being alone.

I lay there not really allowing myself to think. Thinking was dangerous; it led to remembering, and my memories were stained with pain and hurt and the kinds of things that made most people’s nightmares look like a walk in the park. Instead, I tracked the uneven cabin ceiling. My eyes followed the planes of the wood from one end to the other and back again until they grew heavy.

A knock on the door startled me sending my already restless heart into overdrive and I rubbed at my eyes.

“Hello?” I called out hoping to hear Marissa’s voice, but I knew it wasn’t her. She wouldn’t have knocked; she would have barged right in and demanded answers.

“Penny, it’s me.”

I squeezed my eyes shut, but my mind betrayed me as an image of Blake’s face filled my head.

Another knock.

“Penny.”

Forcing myself to sit up, I swung my legs over the edge of the bed. He wasn’t going away. Blake—our connection—was something I was going to have to deal with sooner or later, and from Blake’s admissions over the last few days, it seemed that he was making the decision for me.

My legs were like lead as I walked to the door. It swung open and Blake stood there looking at me with such reverence in his eyes I almost crumpled. Maybe I did crumple because, before my head had time to process what was happening, I was in Blake’s arms, and he was holding on to me like he needed me to breathe.

“I’ve missed you so much. I’ve tried to stay away, to give you space, but I can’t. I can’t spend another day feeling like you might slip through my fingers again.”

One of Blake’s hands buried itself in my hair and cradled my head holding me to him. My face pressed up against the collar of his hoodie, and I breathed him in. He smelled familiar, like damp grass and fresh air, of a time when things were less complicated, and my heart ached for us. At that moment, we weren’t two strangers reunited by chance; we were sixteen-year-old Blake and Penny.

And we needed each other to survive.

Melanie Winters and Daniel Montgomery shared a love most only dream of, a love they believed bonded them together for life. When their world is shattered by the tragic loss of their daughter, overwhelming grief and misguided guilt distorts the truth, and their relationship ends in uncertainty and unanswered questions. For nine years, they drift through life, each unable to forget the one who holds the strings to their heart. In an attempt to escape the pain of her past, Melanie finds herself trapped in a loveless marriage, while Daniel loses himself in a career that means nothing without Melanie by his side. Now, when their lives again intersect, neither can deny the connection they felt so long ago. But will the power that drew them together be enough to heal the wounds from their past, and will they have the courage to overcome the insecurities and fears that threaten to keep them apart? Pulled is a story of attraction and separation, of destiny and duty, of a love so strong it refuses to give up even when all others have. "Okay, this one did it for me in a big way. I'm an angst-lover. And by that I mean, I'm a Thoughtless, Beautiful Disaster, Love Unscripted, Slammed, Fifty Shades of Everything, kind of reader. But there's gotta be an HEA. And not a half-done HEA but a real yeah-this-story-has-been-agonizing-but-look-it-was-all-worth-it HEA. So, that said, I earnestly recommend this book. If you're like me, you'll like this. Enjoy!" Morrison (Caldwell Brothers, #2)Morrison by Chelsea Camaron
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Where to start with how much I loved this book. Morrison "Aces" Caldwell is a professional gambler and he's very good at it. In fact, he's so good at it, he has a system for how he plays, when he plays and where he plays.

He's also a "player" in a very arrogant way. He introduces himself to the women as "Call me Caldwell!" This way there's no first name and no way for these women to find him if he doesn't want to be found. Our Heroine, Hailey is a single mother trying to do the best she can by her child within the confines of her "relationship" with Sean "Monte" Timmons. It's not even a real "relationship."

"Sean 'Monte' Timmons owns me. He owns us. How the hell did this keep happening to me? The cycle of misery - wash, rinse, repeat. From one man's property to another."

These two meet under less than perfect circumstances when Morrison is blocking her car at the casino and she needs to pick up her daughter Marisa or Ris Priss as they call her. And boy do these two have a way of introducing themselves! Hot, steamy, sizzling off the charts way of introducing themselves. If I wasn't already so in love with this book, this just sealed the deal for me.

Hailey has no intention of ever seeing Morrison again. However, when a crisis arises with Ris Priss, because Monte really is an A$$HAT, unbeknownst to her, he was on his way to see her again and followed her when she went to pick her daughter up. This is where we start to see that Morrison is really a good man that his Momma would be proud of.

Hailey and Marisa end up in Detroit staying with Morrison and his brothers Jagger and Hendrix and Livi Hendrix's wife. Hailey is not happy about this at all and doesn't want to feel like she owes anyone or that she's owned by anyone. She's already had that situation with Monte and is finally free... or is she?

She doesn't want to be anyone's problem and while she's appreciative of the help, she has a strong sense of needing and wanting to get herself and Marisa out the situation that she's in. Morrison tries to make her see how much he cares about her and Ris Priss by telling her...

"Little momma, you gotta know your front is hot. 'Cause, baby, a strong woman is sexy as hell. But you also gotta know there is nothing - and I mean nothing - that makes the man I am fall harder than watching the beauty you share with that little girl right in there."

I'm crazy about how much Morrison bonded and fell in love with Ris Priss and how much she loved him. She has this big, strong man wrapped around her little finger. He in fact calls her "little one" and every time he does, it just melts my heart that much more.

"However, now little chick and I have our one-on-one Wednesday date night, and f*** if she doesn't have me opening doors and $hit. It's the first time in my life that I've wined and dined someone who actually tugs at the hardened Caldwell heartstrings."

As we move through the book, both Hailey and Morrison end up back in Vegas thanks to that scumbag Monte. Although Morrison isn't too thrilled to see Hailey there because he was "handling" the situation. But Hailey, being the strong independent woman she wants to and needs to be, wanted to handle it herself and boy did she do a D**n fine job too!! Unbeknownst to Hailey however, Morrison takes care of another Monte induced problem.

Here's what I know about this book without giving spoilers... Morrison is a man any woman would be proud to be loved by. He's strong, caring and when he loves, he loves totally and completely. Hailey is a woman that is strong willed and independent and one of the best mother's I've ever seen. And the sex these two have is OFF THE CHARTS HOT!!!

Can Hailey accept what and who Morrison is and let him fully into her and Ris Priss's life?

Can Morrison be patient enough to wait for this to happen? Will they find their HEA away from Vegas and all the drama and trauma that happens there? Can two people that in my eyes are meant to be together find their way to the path that leads them to the perfect ending? For the answers to all these questions and full does of an alpha male, pick up this book. You won't be sorry!!!

The Highlander's Accidental Marriage (Marriage Mart Mayhem #6)The Highlander's Accidental Marriage by Callie Hutton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It's been a long time since I've read a historical romance so when given the chance to read this one, I figured what the heck, why not go back to my "romance roots" so to speak.

I really enjoyed this book although I struggled with the concept of being "accidentally" married. I didn't even know that was possible, but I learned something new in this book that back this era in Scotland, you announce you're married and you're married! Who knew?

Anyway, we have Lady Sarah and the swoon-worthy Professor Braeden who rescues our damsel and her maid who are traveling north to assist with Lady Sarah's twin sister who's having a baby. Unfortunately there's an accident that results in both of them being the only survivors.

They each have individual goals that definitely don't include marriage, but as we find out, it's now out of their hands. There are a few incidents that lead up to this part of the book and there is some hilarity in that old adage, "what can go wrong does go wrong." However, it's a very well written book and I did enjoy reading it. What is clear though is that Braeden is drawn to Lady Sarah as she is to him, but neither wants to admit it. Isn't that always the case though?

From here the story takes some predictable turns, but that didn't deter me from enjoying it thoroughly. I loved reading about this couple and would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a sexy Scotsman and his lady!

Daring Her Love: A Bradens Novella (1001 Dark Nights)Daring Her Love: A Bradens Novella by Melissa Foster
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What's better than meeting a tall, charming and sexy stranger in an airport bar that has sin written all over him? Nothing I tell you!!! This is how our H/h meet for the first time.... or is it their first time meeting?

Eric and Kat were nearly exploding with the sex vibes flying off them. Talk about scorching! Kat says it best as Eric approaches her from the other side of the bar....

"Oh boy, Mr. F**k Me Eyes was on the move, and holy hell, this man didn't move; he prowled."

Kat has been on a mission for the last year to find the "right" kind of guy instead of "Mr. Right Now" which she feels Eric is, but it's been so long for her to be with anyone that she just couldn't resist the temptation. Although she did try, but Eric is one persistent man. Along with that persistency, is a man that has all the right parts....

"Lordy, Lordy that man was hung like no other, and damn did he know how to use all those gloriously hard inches."

Thinking she was "scratching an itch" Kat was more than surprised when Eric ended up not only on her same flight, but going to exact same place she's going to; her best friend Brianna's house with her husband Hugh, who just happens to be Eric's best friend!!

I loved how these two connected from the start.

They were both looking for something more, which scared them both and feeling vulnerable was a new emotion for Eric given how he grew up. But he was willing to risk it all so Kat would see the "real" him and not the famous race car driver the media made him out to be. He was totally focused on helping Kat overcome fears one of which she couldn't remember why she was so afraid. Needless to say, Eric plays a key part in not only remembering but overcoming it.

The more I read, the more I loved Kat and Eric both individually but especially as a couple. They burned up the sheets that's for sure; although there weren't any sheets involved in any of their sizzling sex scenes, which just makes it that much hotter in my opinion.

Can these two overcome their fears of exposing themselves to another person and believe in an HEA? Pick up this novella and find out for yourself. You won't be sorry.

This book is a novella in Melissa Fosters' Love In Bloom: The Bradens series. It can be read as a standalone.

Bloody…broken…barely surviving…

Danae “Dani” Espinoza is on the run and desperate to escape the demons of her past. Plans to hide out in a sleepy Los Angeles suburb turn into a pipe dream as she is drawn into the secret filled world of the local motorcycle club. Dani soon learns that her secrets and lies are nothing compared to those kept behind the clubhouse doors. Trying to avoid the suspicious Vice President, she must keep a low profile in order to survive. The trouble is he has other ideas.

Bike…babes…and booze…

Tyler "Hero" Tobias has simple needs. Being the Heaven's Rejects MC Vice President, he has all three at his disposal. But he has his own ghosts that keep him awake at night. When Dani arrives at the clubhouse, he knows he should stay away but there is something about her dark beauty and the mystery that surrounds her that makes him burn. There are secrets in her eyes and lies in her smile and he knows he should put his club first, but Hero’s heart and loyalty are about to be tested.

Can an angel with blood-covered wings and the devil himself resist temptation or will they risk bringing hellfire down on everything that they love?

Cold. All I can feel is a deep chill blanketing my body. My eyes open to complete darkness as a voice calls to me. Its muffled tones send shivers down my spine with every garbled word. A sense of familiarity floats around me as its words become clearer.
“Run, Dani,” it pleas from beyond the black veil shrouding the room. “Escape while you can,” it continues. Panic courses through my veins. Where in the hell am I? Why can’t I see anything? The pleas go unanswered as my voice fails to render sound.

“Help!” I scream internally, “Please, fucking help me!”

The voice’s call fades with each word. “You need to get the hell out of here, Dani. You need to move. Find a wall and escape,” I coach to myself. A cold chill of air sweeps into the darkness encompassing me as I try to feel the place around me. My fingers plunge into a dense, sticky liquid as I crawl forward causing my body to slide with each movement. A hard surface is finally inching its way under my fingers.

Crawling upwards, I splay my hands against the cool wall. “You’re on your feet, Dani. The hardest part is over now. Time to find a door or a light switch, something to get us out of here,” my internal coach continues.

Keeping close to the wall, I finally find a switch. Flicking it upwards, the light shines brilliantly. As my eyes adjust to the light, my hands come into my vision. A scream barrels out of my throat when I see the sticky, red blood covering my hands and clothes. My heart races as I frantically wipe the blood away. Blood begins to pool at my feet, inching toward me. Rushing away from the blood, I fall backward into a solid, but warm obstacle. Before I can turn around, hands grasp my arms as a person’s hot breath trails down my neck.

“Hello, Dani,” a different voice whispers in my ear. “Welcome to Hell. You’re mine now,” the voice crackles as my body is pulled into black oblivion.

When it comes to his career, race-car driver Eric James is intense, obsessive, and passionate, but when it comes to sex, there’s only one kind—daring, unbridled, and no-strings-attached. EXCERPT:
“I hope you don’t mind, but I ordered you a lemon-drop martini. I figured we could start over.” “Start over?” He reached for her hand. “I hope to be with you long past tonight, and the story you tell your friends should be a bit more romantic than picking each other up in an airport lounge.” Her heart skipped a beat. “That’s really thoughtful.” “And a little selfish, I’m afraid. I’m sure you have guy friends, and I don’t want them picturing you doing naughty things with me in the men’s bathroom.” She laughed. “I’d never tell anyone that.” He arched a brow. “I have a feeling Brianna knows.” She nibbled on her lower lip, and he used his free hand to draw her closer by the nape of her neck. “That’s okay, darlin’. I was kidding. I just want you to have a story you’re proud to tell, not one that makes you wonder if you made a mistake.” “Thank you.” She leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. He deepened the kiss, sliding his knee between her legs and moving closer. The press of his lips sent a rush of heat through her. She’d been dying to kiss him all evening, and now, with the crashing of the waterfall just beyond the glass and shadows dancing in their private candlelit room, she took her fill. His tongue swept over every dip of her mouth, over her teeth, and then he pulled back and slicked it over her lower lip, leaving her breathing hard and moving hungrily in for more. She wound her arms around his neck, and their mouths came together hard and fast. His hands slid to her hips, holding her there, burning right through her clothing. She wanted to move from her chair to straddle his lap and let their bodies decide where to go next, but the sound of footsteps brought her mind back to reality, and she moved away with a whimper of loss. His hand slid from her hip, down her forearm, and his fingers laced with hers, as if he, too, couldn’t stand losing the connection.
